The Enigma of the Oakville Ooze

In the summer of 1994, the residents of Oakville, Washington woke up to a peculiar sight. Rain was not uncommon in the rainy city, but this was unlike any rain they had ever seen before.

Gelatinous blobs resembling jellyfish fell from the sky, coating everything in sight. What's more, people began falling ill.

Oakville residents were mystified

The first to notice these strange occurrences was police officer David Lacey. As he drove with a friend on that rainy day, they switched on the wipers to clear the windshield, but all they got was a smeared view.

Stopping at a gas station, Lacey donned a pair of gloves and discovered a thick, jelly-like substance on his car. While this was highly unusual, Lacey remained unperturbed until he too fell ill.

It wasn't long before others in Oakville, a town steeped in logging history since its establishment in 1905, reported the same eerie phenomenon. A woman who stepped outside to enjoy the rain found peculiar jelly-like clusters littering the ground, each the size of a grain of rice and transparent.

Over the following three weeks, Oakville witnessed these strange blobs fall from the sky on three separate occasions. Lacey reflected in a 1996 interview, “We knew this wasn't something ordinary, as we had never seen anything like it before. Alarm bells were ringing in our minds that something was amiss, this was far from normal.”

Symptoms start to surface

The suspicion of the locals seemed to be justified, as within a day of contact with these strange substances, the townsfolk started feeling unwell. Lacey reported feeling fatigued and nauseous the very next day.

Another resident, Beverly Roberts, shared with a local newspaper that shortly after bringing some of the blobs home to examine them, she felt unwell, experiencing symptoms like dizziness that prompted her to seek medical attention.

Other residents also reported various health issues like respiratory problems, ear infections, and flu-like symptoms. These ailments were severe enough to cause some people to faint, necessitating hospital admission for several days.

The situation was even graver for the animals in the area. Roberts mentioned that at least 12 animals perished after encountering these mysterious blobs. Among the casualties were a frog and a crow found near the spots in her garden, as well as a friend's kitten.

Unraveling the Mystery of the Enigmatic Oakville Substance

Initially, local physician Dr. David Little didn't pay much attention to the peculiar spots. However, as more of his patients reported unusual symptoms, he decided to investigate further by taking a sample to a nearby hospital for testing.

Upon examination under a microscope, hospital experts made a startling discovery - the sample contained human white blood cells, which are typically used by the body to combat infections. Odd as it may be, this finding did not fully explain why numerous individuals were falling ill.

The samples were subsequently forwarded to the state Department of Health and Department of Ecology, revealing the presence of two types of bacteria - pseudomonas fluorescens and enterobacter cloacae. Debate ensued as to whether these bacteria were responsible for the widespread health issues.

A Department of Ecology member, Mike Osweiler, identified cells of varying sizes in the clumps, deducing that they originated from a deceased organism, albeit not a human one. Their lack of nuclei ruled out the possibility of them being human blood cells or of human origin altogether.

Residents claimed that the mysterious clumps somehow ascended into the air, disintegrated, and dispersed across Oakville, allegedly due to either a natural occurrence or human intervention. One theory linked it to exercises carried out by the Air Force nearby, purportedly leading to the destruction of the local jellyfish population.

Alternatively, some locals speculated a more nefarious explanation - that the spots were a result of clandestine biological weapons testing, with the local incidents serving as a smokescreen. While the government acknowledged conducting exercises 65-80 km from Oakville, it denied engaging in biological warfare against its own populace.

Dr. Little posited that the spots could have been caused by aircraft emissions, which could account for the presence of human blood cells. He also suggested the link to sick and deceased animals due to aircraft systems using antifreeze. However, the FAA dismissed the idea that the chemicals used would have caused the spots to be blue instead of translucent.

The most plausible theory centered on star jelly, a term akin to the Oakville phenomenon. Star jelly, associated with various substances like frog spawn, sodium polyacrylate crystals, or algae, dates back to the 14th century and is periodically reported worldwide. Yet, it has never been documented falling from the sky as rain or associated with the illness or death of animals.

The enigmatic Oakville spots remained shrouded in uncertainty, with no definitive answers likely forthcoming. With no surviving samples and inconclusive analyses at the time, their true nature remains a mystery. Whether it was star jelly or merely a coincidence amidst the frequent rains and illnesses in Oakville, the strange occurrences might never be fully explained.

The Oakville spots, while peculiar, are not entirely unique. Nature is replete with inexplicable phenomena, including instances where everything from meat to frogs has precipitated from the sky. Whether the Oakville Drops will ever be comprehensively understood is a riddle that may only be elucidated if they inexplicably reappear.
